AI readiness

Two-thirds of Shopify product pages aren't readable by AI shopping agents

September 2026 · 4 min read

Adobe Analytics tracks traffic to over a trillion retail site visits a year, and their newest data point is a quiet warning for every Shopify merchant: when Adobe scored how much of a retail page's content is actually machine-readable — structured well enough for an AI agent to reliably parse — homepages averaged 75%, category pages 74%, and product pages only 66%. The single page type every merchant cares most about converting on is the weakest one for AI visibility, on average across the industry.

That gap matters more this year than last. Adobe also found AI-referred traffic to US retail sites grew 138% year-over-year as of May 2026, with cumulative growth of over 1,300% since October 2024 — and that traffic converts better than traditional channels, not worse. Shopify's own Q3 2025 earnings call reported AI-driven traffic to Shopify stores up 7x and AI-attributed orders up 11x since January 2025. Whatever skepticism existed about whether shoppers would actually use ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini to research and buy products, the traffic numbers have moved past that question.

Your store is already being read, whether you've done anything or not

As of Shopify's Spring '26 Edition, agent-readable storefronts (built on the Storefront MCP standard) are turned on by default for every US store. This isn't a feature you opt into — it's already live on your store today. The open question isn't whether AI agents can reach your catalog. It's whether what they find there is complete enough to understand.

What actually makes a product page unreadable to an agent

This isn't about prose quality or SEO copywriting — AI shopping agents lean on structured data, not marketing language. The gaps that consistently break machine readability on Shopify catalogs:

  • No Standard Product Taxonomy category. Without it, an agent can't reliably place your product in the right part of a shopper's search — it has to guess from title text alone.
  • Thin or missing descriptions. A few words of marketing copy gives an agent almost nothing to reason about material, fit, or use case.
  • Missing image alt text.Agents that reason over product imagery still rely on alt text as a grounding signal — without it, an image is just pixels.
  • No SKU or barcode. These are what let an agent (and price-comparison surfaces) match your listing to the same product elsewhere with confidence.

None of these show up as a “broken” page to a human visitor. Your product page still looks fine. It's only invisible to the thing reading it structurally — which is exactly why most merchants don't know it's happening.

What to do about it

Start by finding out where your own catalog actually stands. RankMyCatalog scans your Shopify catalog against these same structural gaps, shows you exactly which products are affected and why, and proposes fixes — written to Shopify's own Standard Taxonomy and recognized metafields, never hidden custom fields — that you review and approve before anything changes. We're not a checkout middleware and we don't take a cut of your sales; we work upstream, on your catalog data.
